What do film ratings mean?
The Films, Videos and Publication's Act 1993 requires all films for public exhibition to be classified. There are six standard classifications which may sometimes have a cautionary note attached. The cautionary note gives important advice about the content of the film regarding offensive language, violence etc.
Suitable for general audiences of all ages
Younger children may require parental guidance
Suitable for mature persons over 16 years of age
Restricted to persons over 16 years of age unless accompanied by a parent or guardian (also sometimes called R)
Restricted to persons over 16 years of age only

Restricted to persons over 18 years of age only
Underage people are NOT exempt from age restrictions even if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Please note that for all Restricted films, suitable proof of age will be required at the Ticket Office to purchase tickets and also to enter the cinema. It is recommended that a birth certificate, driver's license or photo ID which displays a date of birth is used as proof of age for restricted films.
Who decides the ratings of films?
Films are rated under the Films, Videos and Publications Act 1993. The enforcement of censorship law is through the Censorship Compliance Unit in the Department of Internal Affairs.
